Cleaning Out The Old Update

I have not shared anything in awhile, so I thought I would start with an update on all the squares that I cut.

I ended up with a twin, full, and king size quilt tops.

I am really glad to have them all sewn together, that was a job.

The pictures show the twin and full size, my arms were rubber after finishing the king quilt top, so I did not get a picture.

Now I need to put together the backings and get them quilted.  As soon as that is done, we all have a new quilt for our beds this winter.

Not bad getting 3 quilts from 5,000 squares.

I will post again with the completed quilts.

Cleaning Out the Old

I have decided to clean out all my older fabrics and reorganize.
I have started with all my smaller scraps that I  have been collecting over the last 12 years.
Yesterday and today, I have been cutting 2 1/2" squares and I now have 5095 squares.
They may not be the most beautiful quilts when finished, but I am hoping to get some new quilts for our beds.
How many quilts do you think I can make?

Let the sewing begin, I will post updates as they come along.

Nautical Quilt

As you now, I auditioned for Sewvivor and did not make the top 16.  I have decided to participate in the sewalong for each of the challenges.

The first challenge is a nautical theme. When I think of nautical, I think clean, crisp, and simple.  I have never seen myself as nautical, but this has to be one of my favorite quilts.

I got my inspiration from two of my favorite blogs.   I love the nautical quilt by Red Pepper Quilts and knew if I ever made a nautical quilt I wanted to use Kona Modern Quilts collection.  I combined these fabrics and used the scrappy triangles tutorial from Film in the Fridge.

I love how it pops against the Carolina blue sky.

I used a red and white striped fabric for the binding.

Along with the Kona Modern Quilt fabrics, I added some Kona solids and a yellow chevron print.

The quilting is awesome, if I do say so.

Last is my beautiful granddaughter, Selena, modeling for me.

I can't wait to see what the top 16 come up with.  Keep following along, the next challenge is a quilt as you go bag.

Sewvivor - The Fiber Chick - Cheri Edmonds

This past week I became very excited when I came across a post on Instagram posted by @familyeverafter regarding a contest Sewvivor 3: Quilters Edition.

If you are wondering what Sewvivor is, here is the description of the contest in her own words by Rach @famailyeverafter

What is Sewvivor?
It's a sewing competition that I created on my blog, and its loosely inspired by the show Survivor. We've had two successful seasons so far, with some outstanding sewing and competitors. The main idea is that anyone can audition, "sewlebrity" judges help choose our contestants, we have 4 weeks of sewing competition with specific challenges, and a couple Sewvivor "twists" along the way. The judges and public vote for their favorites after each challenge. The winners score some amazing prizes at the end.

Anyone that knows me, knows that I love reality television.  Since my best friend, Pam, will not audition with me for The Amazing Race, I thought here is my chance to participate in a competition.  I enjoy watching Survivor but know I would never make it, too many bugs, snakes and cat fights.  I knew Sewvivor was for me.

So this is why I am stepping out of my comfort zone and started a blog a few days ago, this is one of the requirements of the contest.  I have been quilting for about 14 years and have had my longarm machine for around 11 years and have enjoyed every minute at my sewing machine.

I would like to share with you my audition quilt.

EUREKA

When I made this quilt, it was to enter in my first quilt show in 2007.  I had taken a class and made a lap size quilt and swore I would never make another one.  Well, I did, and it was a king size and it won Best of Show at the Charlotte Quilters Guild.

It also won Best of Show in the Blennerhassett Museum Quilt Show, 2nd place at the HMQS Quilt Show in Utah and won honorable mention at the NQA Quilt Show in Ohio.
I am really proud of this quilt and never dreamed of winning a ribbon.

I done all the quilting on my longarm machine.

This picture gives a perspective of the size of this quilt.
It measures 105" x 105"
Thanks goes out to my granddaughter and husband for climbing the ladders in the 95 degree heat.

I hope you enjoyed my quilt and I would be so excited to make it in the top 16 contestants.
Please follow along on the contest whether I make it or not.

The pattern for this quilt is Eureka by Jackie Robinson

Aviatrix Medallion Quilt-Along

When I seen the pattern for the Aviatrix Medallion quilt, I knew I had to make it.
I decided to participate in my first quilt-along even though I started a couple of weeks late.
You can find the pattern and the quilt-along at Oh, Fransson website,
I chose the same fabrics that were used in the pattern since I loved everything about it.

My center block and border one.

Border two.

Border three.

Border four and five.

Border six was added last week and the quilt top is now finished.
I love, love, love this quilt!!!!!!
Now to get the backing fabric and get it quilted.
I will be sharing again once quilted.

Sharing Some of my Quilts

I thought that I would share some of my quilts that I have made for my first blog post.

1. Tennessee Waltz

When I made this quilt in a class at the Quilters Gallery, I wanted to use bright fabrics to make this pattern a little more modern.

I fussy cut the centers of my stars and used this awesome fabric for the backing.  I quilted on my longarm machine with the pattern fancy feathers.

2.  Blooming Nine Patch

This is my husbands favorite quilt, I just love how all the fabrics blend together.  This quilt pattern can be found in the Tradition with a Twist book by Blanche Young & Dalene Young Stone.  There are some beautiful quilts in this book.  This quilt measures 72" x 82"

Such fun fabrics and I really like how the red binding makes it pop.

The backing is my favorite, it is a bright colored fabric with mardi gras masks.

3. Persian Fantasy

I had cut all my fabrics in this quilt several years ago and just recently sewed and finished the quilt.  I was not happy with my border fabric, so I opted to leave the borders off.  The quilt measures 56" x 56" and can be found in Batik Beauties by Laurie J. Shifrin.  If you like batik quilts, this book is a must have.

4.  Crazy Eights

This quilt measures 64" x 80"
The Crazy Eight pattern can be found in the Fons & Porter Quilting Quickly spring 2014 magazine.  After make several scrappy trips around the world quilts, I still had many more strips leftover.  When I seen this pattern, I knew it was the one to use the rest of these strips.

I did not think that I would like this quilt, but it has to be one of my favorites once finished.  All that is left to do is throw it in the washer to crinkle it up.

5.  Black & White Stack and Slice

This quilt measures 68" x 90"
I made this quilt top years ago, I cannot recall the name of the pattern.  I wanted a black and white quilt with a touch of red.    I do remember that you stack the fat quarters, slice them and rotate some of the pieces before sewing.

I am in love with the fabric on the back, I have been saving for years to use on this quilt.  My granddaughter is trying to claim this quilt.

6. Rain Stick

This quilt measures 41" x 54".
The Rain Stick pattern is also found in the Fons & Porters summer 2014 Quilting Quickly Magazine.  The pattern in the magazine is a lap size quilt, but I wanted to make it a baby size quilt.  This is the first quilt that I have made with all solids and I plan on making many more with just solids.

7.  One Block Wonders

This quilt was made with an Amy Butler fabric, I am amazed with these quilts.
You can find the directions in the One Block Wonder book by Maxine Rosenthal.  Her method of making this quilt is very simple and easy to put together.

This quilt was made using a Martha Negley fabric, I love the shades of blue, greens and yellows.

I will not bore you with any more of my quilt, I do hope you have enjoyed looking at them as much as I enjoyed making them.  I hope you return to see more quilts as I make them and please be patient with me while I figure out the blogging world.
